Barack Obama's Speech at Fudan University: English-Chinese Full Text
Good afternoon, everyone. It is a great honor to be here today at Fudan University, one of China’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning. I want to thank the university and all of you for the warm welcome.
As someone who has long admired China’s rich history, vibrant culture, and the tremendous progress it has made over the years, I feel deeply privileged to have this opportunity to speak with you.
China and the United States are two of the most important countries in the world. Our relationship is not only crucial for our own people but also for the stability and prosperity of the entire international community. We share common challenges—climate change, global health, terrorism, and the spread of nuclear weapons—and we must work together to address them.
At the same time, we also have differences. These differences should not prevent us from cooperating, but rather they should encourage us to understand each other better. Open dialogue, mutual respect, and shared goals are essential if we are to build a more peaceful and prosperous future.
I believe that the younger generation holds the key to this future. You are the ones who will shape the world of tomorrow. That is why I am so encouraged by the energy, creativity, and ambition of students like you. You are not just preparing for your own futures—you are preparing for the future of the world.
In my time here, I have had the chance to meet many young people, and I have been deeply impressed by your curiosity, your determination, and your desire to make a difference. You are not afraid to ask difficult questions, and you are not afraid to challenge the status quo. That is exactly what the world needs.
I hope that through this visit, we can continue to strengthen the bonds between our peoples. I hope that you will carry forward the spirit of openness, understanding, and cooperation that we have begun to build here today.
Thank you very much. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and engaging in a meaningful conversation with you.
